Good Read: The Girl With The Louding Voice - Abi Dare

In this remarkable story, Adunni, the main character, depicts ambition fuelled with a burning desire to succeed despite all odds. Tales of this type still abound in Lagos, and they are portrayed in the media daily. Adunni is hailed as the poor girl with a rich mind, "Sherlock Holmes," who never stops asking intelligent questions, a child-bride, and a strong-willed girl who grew up fast due to the circumstance her parents put her through. However, she had the guts to pursue the life she wanted. - An education by any means necessary.  Adunni finally got her groove back after reading such an easy book, I could relate to the characters there. the harsh and despicable reality of Lagos till date. I would recommend this book to my friends and would love to see it turned into a film.

The Power Of Music And Its Damning Effects On The Society

The Power Of Music And Its Damning Effects On The Society
I was listening to some classic old tunes ranging from tribal music to ballads and jazz, of which I found soothing at this present time. This made me wonder what effects music was having on the society we live in now, especially amongst our youth. With the spate of unwarranted killings which seems to be a never ending war between the government and bereaved families who have lost loved ones due to knife and crime violence, I ponder on whether music has got a part to play in all of this.

The youths blame government cuts for not finding an outlet to express their creativity, unstable family background and the list of complaints is endless, coupled with the genre of music they now listen to on a growing restless mind,  this is deemed to be seen as a ticking bomb waiting to explode.

It has almost become a daily occurrence to hear that a youth has been gunned or stabbed to death, and now it is now a brazen event that happens in broad daylight.  What is really happening, should it be blamed on unemployment, idleness, or just plain foolishness?

Music changes with times, a friend joked that Barry White's songs made babies that filled out kindergarten schools now who is to be blamed for the songs sending these same youth to their early graves?

Don't we all think it is time we stop encouraging trash music that makes celebrities out of people who are only interested in lining their pockets and could care less of what effects their style of music creates in the mind of those who hear it. Or should we roll with the times and ignore the consequences and be damned later for it?

What is your kind of music and how does it affect the behaviour? Kindly share your thoughts for all to learn.

  1. Music is part of our freedom of expression. Some people gravitate to certain music because it reflects what they are feeling at the moment. Even in absence of that music, people's feelings do not change.
