Good Read: The Girl With The Louding Voice - Abi Dare

Image
In this remarkable story, Adunni, the main character, depicts ambition fuelled with a burning desire to succeed despite all odds. Tales of this type still abound in Lagos, and they are portrayed in the media daily. Adunni is hailed as the poor girl with a rich mind, "Sherlock Holmes," who never stops asking intelligent questions, a child-bride, and a strong-willed girl who grew up fast due to the circumstance her parents put her through. However, she had the guts to pursue the life she wanted. - An education by any means necessary.  Adunni finally got her groove back after reading such an easy book, I could relate to the characters there. the harsh and despicable reality of Lagos till date. I would recommend this book to my friends and would love to see it turned into a film.

S.O.S!!! The Northern Nigeria Massacres

Image
As a child, I lived  among  predominantly Yoruba and Igbo tribes. We enjoyed the friendly banter and things you imagine young children would get up to – lots of mischief.   At school, I enjoyed the stories at english lessons – one in particular was travels of the Bako Family (Biola, Alade and their parents) in Nigeria, culled from the New Oxford English book 5, it details the itinerary journeyed by car to the whole of Nigeria. I felt as if I was part of that adventure, my inquisitiveness grew from thereon. I wanted to know who the Hausa people resided, the only ones I had seen where shoemakers, traders at Idi-araba and the blind singing beggars!

Self to Soul, Which Are You Feeding?

Image
T he human being would say I am soul in a body or I am a soul having a physical experience. How do you put the phrase? When do you know when to feed the soul or the ego? I am asking this questions because some one would say do I have to be a pushover to be wise or walk away from things that does not satisfy me no more. Making drastic decisions even if it means cutting the things you seriously once loved. Being the true self takes grace and wisdom, it also requires tact and strength, What do you say to this?

What Are The Joys Of Being A Teacher?

Image
Teaching is a gift and a passion, you have to be tolerant to be in the class with students from varying backgrounds. Back in Lagos, when I was a pupil, I had some fantastic and not so fantastic teachers, but what I found appalling was the way teachers were being treated by the government and students, it was not pleasant.   In the UK, I have spoken to a few teachers about why they love their role as a teacher, they spoke of the paperwork involved and not enough time to teach the students, their holidays being cut short because they have to act as nannies on behalf of parents, some students have more rights and protection than teachers, and the list goes on. What did you enjoy about your teachers in school and would you be a teacher if the need arises? If you are a teacher, What are the joys of teaching?

African Musicians Raise Ebola Awareness, "Africa Stop Ebola Song"

A rtists from countries: Liberia , Sierra Leone ,  Mali , Congo , Guinea , Cote D'Ivoire, Senegal , Nicaragua came together to raise the awareness to the people on the effects of Ebola.  As related by Tiken Jah Fakoly , one of the stars in this reggae-infused song, to a  Voice of America  reporter, the musicians began talking among themselves and realised that people would listen to them more readily than to politicians.

Nestle's "Exercise In A Bottle" Project To The Rescue For Exercise Haters

Image
Swiss Scientists at the Nestlé’s Geneva HQ confirm they have identified how an enzyme in charge of regulating metabolism can be stimulated by a compound called C13. The goal is to develop a nutritional product that mimics or enhances the effect of exercise for people with limited mobility due to old age, diabetes or obesity,  Kei   Sakamoto , the scientist who oversees research on diabetes and circadian rhythms at Nestle, said in a telephone interview. Test on animals probably won't start for several years, he said. "The enzyme can help people who can't tolerate or continue rigorous exercise," Sakamoto said. "Instead of 20 minutes of jogging or 40 minutes of cycling, it may help boost metabolism with moderate exercise like brisk walking. They'd get similar effects with less strain." Someone once told me that "talk don't cook rice," If nestle believes that this product would work, it would take a miracle.

Ebola Charity: Outrage Over Bob Geldof's Band Aid 30

There has been lots of speculations in the media with reference to Bob Geldof's band aid 30 single to fight Ebola. I noticed that Fuse ODG, Adele and Lily Allen turned down the offer to appear on the single. Listening to the song does not reflect a thing on what Africa is all about. It is more of an insult to Africa as a continent and a disrespect to the dead. I think people should stop jumping on the "Ebola" bandwagon for the monetary gain aspects of it alone. Kudos to the medical officers and innocent citizens who have lost their lives to a terrible disease. I think it is high time Sir Bob Geldof acknowledges that he is not a spokesperson for Africa. Listen to the song and let's know what your thoughts are on this: Yes or No Video Credit: The Guardian

Twisted Nanny Brutally Abuses Toddler, Disturbing Videos

I find these videoes heart wrenching to post, but I had to put them up. I am glad that the hidden camera was installed in the house to monitor the live-in nanny's treatment towards the innocent toddler... But I find this disheartening,  for the tot to be abused in such a horrific way. If the mother of the tot had her suspicions, she should have laid the maid off immediately.  I would want to know the update, and the health of the baby.

President Obama's Immigration Accountability Plan

Image
In this week’s address from the White House , President Obama laid out the steps he took this past week to fix our broken immigration system. Enacted within his legal authority, the President’s plan focuses on cracking down on illegal immigration at the border; deporting felons, not families; and accountability through criminal background checks and taxes.  I hope Britain and other countries will learn from this.

An Interview With Charly Boy: "Nigeria Needs A Revolution"

Image
The nonconformist, Charles Oputa, aka Charly Boy, "His Royal Punkness" granted an interview with Daily Post , Here is an excerpt from the interview. Let’s begin by commiserating with you over the passing of your father, the great Justice Oputa, and how does it feel living without such a big legend?   I don’t see him from the legendary perspective. I just see him as somebody I had a very good and close relationship with as a friend. Even though, he was my father, we were quite close as somebody who taught me at least half of the things I know. He instilled in me very strong morals and values that haven’t really left me. There were values I rebelled against which in my old age I’ve run back to. Of course, it’s always painful when somebody close to you passes on but I think his case doesn’t warrant being sorry for because in our place it is the child that buries the father, not the other way round. He has lived a good life and I think he left a good legacy. Going at the

ILLEGAL!!! Eiffel Towers Night Pictures Violation

Image
I find this annoying, taking pictures of the famous effiel towers at night is now a violation of the law. and it is not a joke.  According to Torrent Freak , the building itself is in the public domain, the light show that illuminates it at night is an artistic work, and as such 'reproducing' it (i.e. snapping a photo) would require the permission of the artist.
