Good Read: The Girl With The Louding Voice - Abi Dare

In this remarkable story, Adunni, the main character, depicts ambition fuelled with a burning desire to succeed despite all odds. Tales of this type still abound in Lagos, and they are portrayed in the media daily. Adunni is hailed as the poor girl with a rich mind, "Sherlock Holmes," who never stops asking intelligent questions, a child-bride, and a strong-willed girl who grew up fast due to the circumstance her parents put her through. However, she had the guts to pursue the life she wanted. - An education by any means necessary.  Adunni finally got her groove back after reading such an easy book, I could relate to the characters there. the harsh and despicable reality of Lagos till date. I would recommend this book to my friends and would love to see it turned into a film.

Tax For Governor's Perfume!!! Port Harcourt Women Protest Against Extortion

Tax For Governor's Perfume!!! Port Harcourt Women Protest Against Extortion
There are things that amazes me to the core, read in the dailies about women protesting over a refusal to pay for an imposed tax on governor's perfume, What A Joke!!! This must be a fluke, an extortion from the  area boys running out of ideas on market traders in Nigeria.

The market women from Mile Three Market in Diobu, Port Harcourt marched to the Government House in protest chanting songs and asked for the intervention of Governor to curb such dodgy activities from the task force members.
“Each of us pays levies ranging from N1, 500 to N4, 000. The one that is annoying us and forced us to embark on this protest is the N2, 000 for ‘Governor’s perfume’. They said the money would be used to purchase perfume for the governor.
“The task force constituted by the government is using their position to intimidate us and extort money from us. They charge us money unnecessarily. They coin name for each of the money they want to take from us.
“Sometimes we don’t sell anything, but they will ensure that we pay more than 1,000 naira daily. We don’t make much in our trade, but our small gains go into the government’s pocket.”
When "agbero boys" aka refined hooligans become task force members who claim their duty is to protect the welfare of the market women, what do you expect? Governor's perfume indeed. I hope they are hinting to the governor that he has body odour!!!
