Ever witnessed the
scenario of parents complementing others people’s children and not theirs?
"That child she is so dense, I do not think there is much hope for
her/him", why can’t you read or be like the rest of your colleagues (age
mates)? and so on. This is the dilemma parents are faced with because they fail
to see the gifts and talents in their children being displayed before them on a
continual basis, thus they panic out of sheer frustration and hopelessness.
Being from the
African lineage makes it bewildering the extent at which parents and family
members will go to humiliate such a child. God helps the child who has no
interest in schooling! He will need sheer determination and strong metal
agility to convince his parents of his future plans.
In Europe I find the
situation of a child being misdiagnosed by so called professional experts’ with
years of experience worst, children being labelled with psychological damaging
names. Imagine a gifted child being termed dyslexia /Attention Deficit Hyperactivity DisorderADHD)Obsessive Compulsive Disorder(OCD).
For me, I term the
word dyslexia as a person who is highly creative and does not necessarily have
to sit behind a desk to make a living. Children being children are filled with
gusto and would boldly speak their mind without mincing their words, that is almost
a lost art in the adult world.
I am sure someone has
a story relating to such traumatic situation; if only we channel our energy in
to looking out for the best in these children, there might be less confusion in
the world today. It takes the love and patience of a parent to recognise the
gifts in a child and not by spending excessive amounts of money on expensive schools and tutors to enable a child
excel.
It is high time
parents stop trying to force their children to live out their unfulfilled
dreams for them. Children are highly creative - let them thrive.
