Good Read: The Girl With The Louding Voice - Abi Dare

In this remarkable story, Adunni, the main character, depicts ambition fuelled with a burning desire to succeed despite all odds. Tales of this type still abound in Lagos, and they are portrayed in the media daily. Adunni is hailed as the poor girl with a rich mind, "Sherlock Holmes," who never stops asking intelligent questions, a child-bride, and a strong-willed girl who grew up fast due to the circumstance her parents put her through. However, she had the guts to pursue the life she wanted. - An education by any means necessary.  Adunni finally got her groove back after reading such an easy book, I could relate to the characters there. the harsh and despicable reality of Lagos till date. I would recommend this book to my friends and would love to see it turned into a film.

Quincy Ayodele Advises Young Women On Marriage - "My Husband Is Still The One That Gives Me Owo Obe"

The CEO of Quincy Herbals, Mrs. Quincy Ayodele is a name well synonymous to health and well-being in the circuits of Nigeria. She recently granted an interview with a known media house on how she balances her life, marriage and her health practice. Excerpts from the interview can be read after the break.

What is your secret on longevity in marriage?

It’s because I married my soul mate. My father researched him well before he allowed him to marry me. It was my father that gave me to him according to how it’s supposed to be. It was his father that came to search for me.

The two fathers talked and the marriage happened and we are happy. I do not even need anything else for my marriage to be okay. No arguments, no hard feeling. I am a very happily married woman.

I can say that to the glory of God and my husband can also say that. We have supportive children and my husband is also very supportive so I don’t see why my marriage could hit any rock. Before I would go and talk in the public, my husband would have taught me, schooled me on what to say.

He would go like, you know you are a village girl o, don’t go and cover your face like a village girl. If you go and show any sign of shyness, I won’t be happy with you when you come back home. Of course, usually, he’s in the audience.

So, with a man like that, why am I going to be fighting him or what will I fight him for? He wants me to be successful for the family because Quincy Herbal is a family business, it’s meant to create generational wealth for the family.

With advice would you give to young couples on marriage?

My advice is that you should involve your parents even before you marry…in the formative years, because they have the experience. They can tell if the boy or girl is good. They can tell from that time, even to the future. They build the foundation for you and you build on it when you are in it properly. All this I love you before marriage is not true o.

The love comes in the marriage. Parents’ advice is very important. That was how I got married and the same way I did for my girls. You examine and test the men they bring for marriage because for instance, a man who cannot take care of his lady while dating will not take care of her in marriage.

Men are supposed to be the leader and breadwinner of the family. And no matter how rich you are as the woman, you must submit to your husband. No matter how much we make at Quincy, my husband is still the one that gives me owo obe (feeding allowance).

He gives me housekeeping money, money to do my hair, my nails. He buys my clothes, underwear, perfumes and that started from when we were dating though he did not have any money then. He used to buy bread, milk to send to my house….all these are worth taking note of because it has torn so many homes apart. A man must live up to his responsibilities. Yes, a woman can step in to help if the situation warrants. You manage with him whatever he can afford.
