When letting go becomes more dramatic than it ought to be, ask Calvin Harris, ever since his ex, Taylor swiftly moved on to Tom Hiddleston, there once love and respect for one another has become a free for all drama! Their latest spat on social media is on taking credit for songs they co-wrote secretly.
TMZ reports that During their relationship, Taylor wrote the song,'TIWYCF', sat down at a piano and did a demo into her iPhone. She sent it to Calvin, who loved it. They both went into a studio and did a full demo with Taylor on vocals and Calvin doing the beat.
They both knew the song would be a hit, but Taylor wrote it for Calvin and both agreed it was a bad idea to let the world know they collaborated as a couple … it would overshadow the song.
So Taylor, who kept the publishing rights, used the pseudonym Nils Sjoberg on the credits.
Fast forward to April 29th. Calvin released the song with Rihanna and it became an instant hit. It’s been on top of the charts on the Dance/Electronic chart for 9 weeks, and on the Billboard 100.
Why is this all an issue now? Taylor Swift's position as a co-writer of the song. She provided lyrics and the melody line, Swift could prevent the song's usage in television and film, but not live performances. In 2014, Harris' ex-girlfriend Rita Ora dealt with this issue. The pop singer claimed that Harris blocked the televised performance of her song "I Will Never Let You Down" at the Teen Choice Awards, a song Harris wrote and produced entirely. "He owns the rights to it … so [he] has to approve anything TV-wise," Rita Ora told Ryan Seacrest in an interview.
The track was the pair's first collaboration, and Ora has even hinted that it may have led to their breakup after a year of dating. In since-deleted tweets, Harris loosely confirmed that he had been behind the performance's cancellation. "But just know I had a damn good reason," he wrote. In the aftermath, rumors swirled that Ora had to delay her album because of Harris banning the release of tracks he produced for it.
I hope karma will not bite back at Calvin Harris.
