Good Read: The Girl With The Louding Voice - Abi Dare

In this remarkable story, Adunni, the main character, depicts ambition fuelled with a burning desire to succeed despite all odds. Tales of this type still abound in Lagos, and they are portrayed in the media daily. Adunni is hailed as the poor girl with a rich mind, "Sherlock Holmes," who never stops asking intelligent questions, a child-bride, and a strong-willed girl who grew up fast due to the circumstance her parents put her through. However, she had the guts to pursue the life she wanted. - An education by any means necessary.  Adunni finally got her groove back after reading such an easy book, I could relate to the characters there. the harsh and despicable reality of Lagos till date. I would recommend this book to my friends and would love to see it turned into a film.

Nigerian Couple To Face Justice For Enslaving Victim For 24 Years

The Edets
Dr Emmanuel  and his wife Antan Edet

The way some Nigerians handle their house helps to the amazement of the society they live in is appalling - This type of attitude can be overlooked back in Nigeria but here in the UK, it could land the Slave master BOSS in jail. Empty promises to poor parents back in Nigeria to give their children a good life back in Britain, while the parents back home would ague that as long as the victim is in the UK, he/she is better off than to come back to Nigeria.

The Edets from Perivale would learn of their fate today in the case that was brought to them by their house-help, Mr Ofonime Sunday Inuk, whom they brought all the way from Nigeria at the age of 13 in 1989 with the pretence of sending him to school and improving his life - But they treated him like an "Omo-odo" with hard labour.

Mr Inuk emailed the charity Hope for Justice who passed on the information to the Metropolitan police Trafficking and Kidnap Unit.

Metropolitan Police Detective Chief Inspector Phil Brewer said in Mr Inuk defence.
‘When the victim left Nigeria, he was a young boy with aspirations but the Edets abused him until he became timid, nervous and obedient.
‘Today the victim is living a new life in the UK. He has a job, a home with his own bed and freedom to move, and he is studying. While he will never fully overcome what happened during those 24 years, he is determined to make the most of the rest of his life and today's conviction will help him feel he can do that. In his own words, he has hope and a future now.
‘I urge anyone else being treated the way that this victim was to please tell the police or call the national trafficking helpline. There are specially trained people waiting to help you.’
Ben Cooley, from the Hope For Justice campaign group, described this case as ‘unfortunately, not surprising’.

I know there are still lots of victims out there but are too afraid to speak out for fear of reprisals - There should be an awareness campaign to end plight of innocent victims.

To the 'Madam Of The House' - who relish the opportunity of abusing their house-helps because they can't handle their stress levels and frustrations - The police is watching you - This is not Nigeria.
